Kate was exhausted as she parked the car in the underground garage of her apartment block. It was past midnight, and though her feet were heavy, her mind was still racing. She had spent all evening at the murder scene in Rathgar. There were some similarities with the other two stabbings, but this time the victim had put up a fight, and far from being staged like the first two killings, the crime scene was messy and chaotic. Corcoran was keen to connect it to the other deaths, but Kate had her doubts. The victim, whose name was Phyllis Berry, was proving to be elusive. After hours of sifting through the house, Kate still knew little of the victim. With the husband in intensive care, unable to be questioned, it remained to be seen if there had been an intruder at all. There had been no signs of a break-in, and it was not unknown for domestic violence to break out even in a marriage of many years. There were no children to question. The couple were retired civil servants.

Kate pressed the lift button, too weary to take the stairs to her third-floor home. If the Gardai couldn’t find a link with the other two victims, they would have to assume there were two sadistic killers on the loose, and not enough manpower for separate enquiries.
